There is a big difference between your average fly by night developer and a real web development team. Yes you might be able to get a developer to build something for you that works, but do you know what is really being built on the back end?

To many times before we have had customers that have used a developer only to find out in the long run, after he vanished, or after a falling out that the developer clearly was not experienced enough to do the project to begin with.

Sometimes the code will be what is called "Spaghetti code" the code is so nasty and unformatted that it would be hard for any developer to understand. Sometimes the code is just so inefficient that yes it might work currently when you test it and it might seem  great to the untrained eye, but would never stand up to serious traffic. We have even seen code that was so poorly written that 100 visitors per hour would totally bog down a brand new server and crash the website.

This is caused by things like careless code, that might have poorly written database queries. Here is a perfect example. One client had a administrative page that was running real slow. when we looked at the code it turned out that every time the page loaded there was approximately 2000 database queries being ran. We rewrote the page and now when it loads the page only runs 3 database queries.
